Treatment

Sports Injury

Whether you are a runner, cyclist, gym enthusiast or simply enjoy staying active, a sports injury can affect both your performance and everyday life. Pain, stiffness or reduced mobility may make it difficult to continue the activities you enjoy or carry out normal daily tasks.

At Maggie’s Acupuncture, every treatment begins with a detailed consultation to understand your symptoms, medical history and recovery goals. A personalised treatment plan is then developed to support pain management, comfortable movement and your wider rehabilitation where appropriate.

Sports Injury

Conditions commonly treated

Acupuncture may be considered for a range of sports and exercise-related conditions, including:

  • Muscle strains
  • Ligament sprains
  • Knee pain and runner’s knee
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Shin splints
  • Achilles tendon pain and tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Ankle and foot injuries
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Hip pain and stiffness
  • Sports-related back pain
  • Recurring exercise-related discomfort
  • Post-training muscle tension

If you have recently experienced a severe injury, suspected fracture, significant swelling or sudden loss of movement, an appropriate medical assessment may be recommended before acupuncture treatment.

Potential benefits

Every person responds differently to treatment. Depending on your individual presentation, acupuncture may help support:

  • Pain management
  • Reduced muscular tension
  • More comfortable movement
  • Joint mobility and flexibility
  • Local circulation
  • Recovery following exercise
  • Rehabilitation and gradual return to activity
  • General wellbeing during recovery

Treatment process

  1. Initial consultation – We discuss your symptoms, how the injury occurred, your medical history and your treatment goals.
  2. Assessment – The affected area, movement and any activities that aggravate your symptoms may be assessed where appropriate.
  3. Personalised acupuncture treatment – Acupuncture points are selected according to your individual presentation rather than using the same approach for every sports injury.
  4. Aftercare and rehabilitation advice – Appropriate advice about rest, pacing, gentle movement, stretching or rehabilitation may be discussed.
  5. Ongoing treatment plan – If further sessions are recommended, the plan will be reviewed according to your response, progress and recovery goals.

Why consider acupuncture?

Acupuncture may be used alongside physiotherapy, rehabilitation exercises and conventional medical care as part of a broader approach to sports injury recovery.

Treatment is selected according to the location and nature of your symptoms, with the aim of supporting pain management, reducing muscular tension and encouraging more comfortable movement. For some patients, this may make it easier to continue with an appropriate rehabilitation programme and return gradually to normal activity.

Acupuncture does not replace necessary medical investigation or rehabilitation. Where appropriate, Maggie may recommend that you also seek advice from a GP, physiotherapist or another healthcare professional.

Is this treatment suitable for me?

An initial consultation may be helpful if you:

  • Have an ongoing sports or exercise-related injury
  • Experience recurring muscular or tendon discomfort
  • Feel stiff or restricted during exercise
  • Have discomfort that affects everyday movement
  • Are returning gradually to activity after an injury
  • Would like additional support alongside physiotherapy or rehabilitation
  • Prefer an individual treatment plan based on your symptoms and goals

If you are unsure whether acupuncture is appropriate for your condition, this can be discussed during your initial consultation.
