Can I Exercise During Recovery?

In many cases, light movement supports recovery better than complete rest. Your practitioner can advise when and how to return to exercise safely based on your individual condition.

Understanding the issue

Many people worry that exercising during recovery might make their condition worse, while others are keen to return to their normal activities as quickly as possible. In reality, the best approach usually lies somewhere in between.

For many musculoskeletal conditions, gentle movement can improve circulation, reduce stiffness and help maintain joint mobility. However, exercising too intensely or returning to demanding activities before your tissues have fully recovered may increase discomfort or delay healing.

Recovery is rarely a straight line. Some days you may feel ready to do more, while on other days your body may need additional rest. Listening to your symptoms and gradually increasing activity is often more beneficial than pushing through pain.

If you are receiving acupuncture, your practitioner will consider your symptoms, activity level and recovery goals when advising you about exercise throughout your treatment.

Practical next steps

  • Continue gentle movement if it feels comfortable and does not significantly increase your symptoms.
  • Gradually increase activity rather than returning immediately to your previous exercise routine.
  • Avoid exercising through sharp or worsening pain.
  • Allow time for rest, sleep and recovery alongside physical activity.
  • Ask your practitioner if you are unsure what level of exercise is appropriate for your stage of recovery.

When to seek further help

Seek further medical advice if:

  • Pain becomes suddenly much worse after activity.
  • You develop significant swelling, weakness or loss of function.
  • Symptoms continue to worsen despite reducing activity.
  • You are unsure whether it is safe to return to exercise after an injury or medical condition.
