What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment that involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. It is commonly used to support pain relief, stress management, sleep, wellbeing and recovery.

What happens during my first appointment?

Your first appointment begins with a detailed discussion about your health concerns, medical history, symptoms, lifestyle and treatment goals. The consultation also includes traditional Chinese medicine assessment, such as observing the tongue and feeling the pulse. I will explain the treatment process, answer any questions and, where appropriate, provide a personalised acupuncture treatment.

How long does an appointment take?

Your initial appointment usually lasts around 75 minutes and includes a detailed consultation followed by an acupuncture treatment. Follow-up appointments usually last around 45 minutes.

What should I wear?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated.

For ear acupuncture, no special clothing is required.

Can I eat before treatment?

It is recommended that you eat a light meal before your appointment and stay well hydrated. Avoid arriving on an empty stomach or immediately after a heavy meal.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies depending on your individual needs, how long you have had the condition and how you respond to acupuncture. Your treatment plan will be discussed with you following your initial consultation and reviewed as treatment progresses.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is generally considered safe when provided by a suitably trained practitioner. Sterile, single-use disposable needles are used. Please read our Consent & Safety information for important details about suitability, possible side effects and informed consent.

Can I continue taking my medication?

Acupuncture can generally be used alongside prescribed medication and other healthcare treatments. Continue taking medication exactly as prescribed unless your GP or specialist advises otherwise. Please tell me about all medicines and supplements you take before treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Most side effects are mild and short-lived. These can include temporary soreness, slight bleeding or bruising at the needle site, tiredness, light-headedness or feeling faint. Serious complications are rare when acupuncture is provided by a properly trained practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. Please tell me if you feel unwell during or after treatment.

Is parking available?

Yes. Free on-site parking is currently available for patients attending appointments.

How do I book?

Appointments can be booked securely online through the Cliniko booking system. If you have any questions before booking, please feel free to get in touch.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book an appointment directly without a referral from your GP. If you are receiving medical treatment or are unsure whether acupuncture is suitable for you, please speak with your GP or contact me before booking.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or rearrange your appointment, please contact me as soon as possible. Please read the Cancellation Policy for current notice requirements, late cancellations, missed appointments and any applicable fees.

Can I claim acupuncture treatment through my private health insurance?

Some private health insurance and health cash plan policies may reimburse acupuncture treatment provided by a British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) member. Coverage and claim requirements vary between insurers and individual policies, so please check directly with your insurance provider before booking. A treatment receipt can be provided on request to support your claim.
