When Should I Seek Further Medical Advice?

While many symptoms improve with time and appropriate treatment, you should seek further medical advice if your symptoms become significantly worse, new symptoms develop or your recovery is not progressing as expected.

Understanding the issue

Most people notice gradual improvement as recovery progresses, but healing does not always follow the same pattern for everyone.

Although temporary fluctuations are common, certain changes may indicate that your condition needs further assessment. Increasing pain, significant swelling, loss of movement, numbness, weakness or symptoms that continue to worsen despite treatment should not be ignored.

Acupuncture can play an important role in supporting recovery for many musculoskeletal conditions, but it is not intended to replace appropriate medical assessment when this is needed.

If you are ever uncertain about your symptoms, it is always appropriate to discuss them with your practitioner or seek advice from your GP or other healthcare professional.

Practical next steps

  • Monitor how your symptoms change over time.
  • Follow the treatment and self-care advice you have been given.
  • Contact your practitioner if you are unsure about your progress.
  • Arrange a GP appointment if symptoms continue to worsen or fail to improve.
  • Seek urgent medical attention if you experience severe or sudden symptoms.

When to seek further help

Seek immediate medical advice if you experience:

  • Sudden severe pain or rapidly increasing swelling.
  • Significant weakness or inability to move a limb.
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control.
  • Numbness around the groin or saddle area.
  • Difficulty breathing, chest pain or other medical emergencies.

If in doubt, always seek appropriate medical assessment.
