Cancer & Chemotherapy Support

Cancer treatment can bring physical discomfort and emotional strain. At Maggie’s Acupuncture in Hazel Grove, Stockport, supportive appointments focus on your individual symptoms, comfort and wellbeing.

Acupuncture may be considered alongside your hospital care, following assessment and discussion with your oncology team. It does not treat cancer or replace chemotherapy, radiotherapy, prescribed medication or medical follow-up.

Cancer & Chemotherapy Support

Conditions commonly treated

Symptoms that may be discussed at your consultation include:

• Chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting.
• Pain or discomfort associated with cancer treatment.
• Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, including tingling, numbness or burning sensations.
• Treatment-related hot flushes.

Suitability and evidence differ between symptoms. New or worsening symptoms must also be reported to your oncology team.

Potential benefits

For some people, acupuncture may help manage treatment-related nausea and vomiting alongside prescribed anti-sickness medication. It may also help with selected pain symptoms.

Research into chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is promising but remains limited. Acupuncture cannot be relied upon to reverse nerve damage or prevent treatment side effects.

Your response will be reviewed regularly. Benefits vary and cannot be guaranteed.

Treatment process

Please contact Maggie before booking if you are currently receiving cancer treatment.

Your consultation reviews your diagnosis, treatment schedule, medication, current symptoms and advice from your hospital team. Recent blood results or further guidance from your oncology team may be needed before deciding whether to proceed.

If suitable, treatment uses sterile, single-use needles, with positioning and stimulation adapted to your comfort. Appointment timing and treatment areas are selected according to your individual circumstances.

At each visit, we review any changes in your health or cancer treatment. Acupuncture may be adapted, postponed or declined when it is not appropriate.

Why consider acupuncture?

Some people choose acupuncture as an additional approach to symptom management during or after cancer treatment. Appointments provide time to discuss how you are feeling and agree on realistic, individual goals.

Evidence varies by symptom, and acupuncture is offered only as complementary care. Decisions about your cancer treatment and prescribed medicines remain with your oncology team.

Is this treatment suitable for me?

Adults during or after cancer treatment, where assessment confirms that acupuncture is appropriate and consistent with advice from their oncology team.

Please tell Maggie about low blood counts, infection, unusual bruising or bleeding, blood-thinning medication, lymphoedema, recent surgery, radiotherapy, or any implanted medical devices.

If you develop a fever or feel suddenly unwell during chemotherapy, contact your oncology emergency service immediately and follow the instructions provided by your hospital.

If you are unsure whether acupuncture is appropriate for your condition, this can be discussed during your initial consultation.
