Sleep & EnergySleep

Why do I keep waking up at night and struggle to get back to sleep?

Stress, anxiety, pain, caffeine, alcohol and an uncomfortable bedroom can all disturb sleep. Sometimes a condition such as sleep apnoea may be involved. If waking at night regularly leaves you tired during the day, reviewing your sleep routine and discussing ongoing symptoms with your GP can help.

Understanding the issue

Waking during the night can be frustrating, especially when you struggle to get back to sleep.

Stress and anxiety can make it difficult to settle, while pain or discomfort may interrupt sleep. Caffeine, alcohol, noise and bedroom temperature can also play a part.

The important question is whether these awakenings are frequent, leave you awake for long periods, or affect how you feel and function during the day.

Practical next steps

• Keep a regular waking time, even after a poor night.
• Allow some quiet time to unwind before bed.
• Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol for at least six hours before bedtime.
• Keep your bedroom dark, quiet and comfortable.
• Go to bed when you feel sleepy.

Start with one or two manageable changes. A simple sleep diary may help you notice patterns and explain your symptoms to your GP.

When to seek further help

Speak to your GP if sleep problems have lasted for months, changes to your routine have not helped, or poor sleep is making daily life difficult. Your GP may discuss cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for insomnia.

If you snore loudly, wake gasping or choking, or someone notices pauses in your breathing during sleep, arrange a GP appointment.
